FSD has designed the fire protection systems for the extension of Malmö Central, where the new Glashallen (glazed entrance area to the train station) connects the City tunnel with other train and bus communications.
About 40,000 people pass daily through Malmö Central. This of course puts great demands on fire and evacuation safety. The extension, Glashallen, is made of steel and glass. In this new part of the station, new shops and restaurants/cafes have been established.
The fire protection at Malmö Central was dimensioned with analytical methods. As the station was equipped with a sprinkler system, there were excellent opportunities to create an open and welcoming station which is safe for passengers. A fire and evacuation process was simulated with various simulation programs to verify evacuation safety, and the fire protection for the steel structures was dimensioned analytically to be able to resist a complete fire development.
